All Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) technicians working with vehicles must possess an air conditioning qualification that includes a refrigerant handling accreditation. This qualification is essential to comply with the F-gas regulation set forth by the European Union (EC842/2006 and Annex to Regulation EC307/2008). The Air Conditioning route is specifically designed for technicians whose job roles involve the maintenance and repair of light vehicles, ensuring they have contact with the vehicle's air conditioning system during their work activities. In simpler terms, this refrigerant handling qualification is necessary if your job entails handling or purchasing air-con gas canisters.

Candidates must demonstrate the outcomes by completing and passing two assessment components set by IMI/ABC Awards to earn their air conditioning qualification. For additional information on the F-gas regulation and refrigerant handling, please refer to the following links: F-Gas Regulation Guidance and Guidance for users, producers, and traders.

The technician must be able to work independently and should have at least 3 months of experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles. Most importantly, they should possess the air conditioning qualification and the skills, knowledge, and techniques necessary for proper refrigerant handling to recover and recharge vehicle air conditioning systems without intentionally releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere. Additionally, they should be well-versed in the F-gas regulation governing the use of refrigerants in the automotive industry.
